One of the enterobacterial species, Escherichia coli K-12, has the long history of comprehensive analysis in genetics, biochemistry and molecular biology for more than 50 years. W3110 strain is one of the wild type strains of this organism as MG1655 is. Kohara et al. started to construct physical map of E. coli using lambda phage genomic library of W3110 and published in 1987(Kohara et al. 1987). After this accomplishment of this monumental work, the first genome project was established in 1989 by Takashi Yura. The goal of this project was to initiate systematic sequencing of the E. coli genome. Three years effort, the first 111.4kb contiguous genomic sequence was published and this could show impact of long range genomic structure (Yura et al. 1992, Fujita et al. 1993). After re-organization of project team twice and finally the complete genomic sequence was established in the beginning of 1997 (Aiba et al., 1996, Itoh et al., 1996, Oshima et al., 1996, Yamamoto et al., 1997) except already published sequences of 70-100min chromosomal regions of MG1655 by Blattner group in Wisconsin University, USA(Blattner et al., 1993, Burland et al., 1995, Daniels et al., 1992, Plunkett et al., 1993, Sofia et al. 1994) Japanese group had effort to continue genomic sequencing and completed W3110 genomic sequence in 2003.
